Dr. Ariel Levaggi
Dr. Ariel González Levaggi was born in Buenos Aires in 1984. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina.
In the 2023 he was appointed Director of the Center for International Studies (CEI-UCA) at the Department of Political Sciences and International Relations where he led the US Stidies Program with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Argentina in addition to organize outreaching activities, supervise research, and promote scholars’ participation on international affairs in the public debate. Additionally, he is Senior Researcher of the Strategic and Naval Research Center (SDIEN) of the Argentine Navy.
He is also Executive Board Member of the regional think tank CRIES (Coordinadora Regional de Investigaciones Económicas y Sociales), Co-Chair of the Section Asia and the Americas at the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and Consultant Member of the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI), in addition to regularly collaborate with think tanks such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS, Washington, D.C.), TRENDS Research & Advisory (UAE), Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) and the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA, Turkey), among others.
Recently, he was elected as Latin America and the Caribbean Member-At-Large at the Global South Caucus for International Studies Executive Committee for 2024-2026 of the International Studies Association (ISA), the leading association of scholars and practitioners dedicated to the study of international affairs.
His research is currently focused on international politics and geopolitical trends in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially on the regional geopolitical role and the relations with extrarregional actors. His current lines of research are “New Space Race and the impact in Latin America and the Caribbean” and “Security Trends in the South Atlantic”.
He is the author of two single-author books, Confrontational and Cooperative Regional Orders: Managing Regional Security in World Politics (Routledge, 2020) and Great Power Competition in the Southern Oceans: From the Indo-Pacific to the South Atlantic (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), in addition to more than 50 articles and book chapters, publishing in journals such as International Affairs, Third World Quarterly, Strategic Analysis, International Politics and Foro Internacional, among others.
He held a PhD in International Relations and Political Science from Koç University (Turkey) and a MA in Political Science and Sociology (FLACSO Buenos Aires.
